Brandy Clark, one of the finest singer/songwriters in country music, thought her career would only get place behind the scenes. “I definitely had it in my head that being gay and existence in country music…those two things could not co-exist,” she says. “That’s one of the times I’ve been really happy to be wrong.”
Clark knew plenty of other gay songwriters, like her frequent collaborator, Shane McAnally, but the number of out male lover singers that’ve broken through in country music are comparatively rare — it was only in February of 2021 that T.J. Osborne of The Brothers Osborne came out and became the first out gay artists signed at a major country label. (Similar to Clark, Brandi Carlile, Chely Wright, Orville Peck, and Lil Nas X are not on specifically country music labels.)

Country maverick Brandy Clark is an anomaly in her native Nashville. Not only is she openly lgbtq+ (as is one of her chief collaborators, Shane McAnally), she also has a staunch 9 to 5 songwriting work ethic and a feminist, working-class viewpoint; it’s colored her hits for The Band Perry (“Better Dig Two”), Miranda Lambert (“Mama’s Broken Heart”) and Kacey Musgraves (“Follow Your Arrow”). In her often gallows-humored solo catalog, ladies always triumph over adversity. (See “Stripes,” “Crazy Women” and “Girl Next Door” on her Grammy-nominated sophomore album “Big Day in a Miniature Town.”) “I love a good angry-girl song — I’m not going to lie — and I feel like I’ve had a good run of them,” she says, citing “Daughter” as her favorite. “Because it’s not about blowing s— up or slashing tires; it’s a sweeter, longer-lasting sort of revenge.”
You just attended another Grammy Awards, this period for your single “Love Can Go to Hell.” How was the ceremony?
Well, it doesn’t get elderly, I can tell you that. I didn’t even think I’d get nominated this year, because you never know. But it was a nice shot in the arm for “Big Day,” which came out last June. And I’m not a enormous hob

Ty Herndon and Billy Gilman made headlines in November 2014 by revealing they were gay within hours of each other ... but they weren't the first country artists to make such an announcement, nor the last.
From Chely Wright -- the first well-known country star to come out, in 2010 -- to songwriter Shane McAnally, there have been a few others helping pave the way in the country music industry. On Feb. 3, Brothers Osborne member TJ Osborne came out publicly, in a main attraction in Time. That makes him one of the very not many out country artists signed to a major or large independent record label, along with Brooke Eden, who recently got engaged to her longtime girlfriend, Hilary Hoover.
"I want to get to the height of my career existence completely who I am," says the singer, who's now released three major-label albums with his brother John. "I mean, I am who I am, but I've kept a part of me muted, and it's been stifling."
