Sinéad O'Connor has died at the age of 56 after years of mental health battles, her 'devastated' family confirmed.
The Irish Grammy-winning singer, whose cause of death is not yet known, became world well-known in with her heartrending cover of Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U.
It comes 18 months after the mother-of-four's son Shane, 17, took his life in January after escaping hospital while on suicide watch.
At the time of her death, the musician, who changed her name to Shuhada' Sadaqat in when she converted to Islam, was thought to be spending her time between Co Roscommon, Ireland, and London.
In her last Tweet, O'Connor posted a photo of Shane and said: 'Been living as undead evening creature since. He was the love of my being, the lamp of my soul.

The singer always maintained that her mother’s cruelty, which manifested in physical, sexual and emotional abuse that O’Connor sang about on her devastating debut free “Troy”, was a product of the oppressive way that successive generations of Irish women had been raised. Pointedly, the photo of Pope John Paul II that O’Connor ripped up on SNL had belonged to her mother, who died in a car accident in “My intention had always been to ruin my mother’s photo of the Pope,” O’Connor writes in her memoir. “It represented lies and liars and abuse.” She also knew the suffering she experienced first at abode, then as a teenager living in one of Ireland’s notoriously brutal Magdalene asylums, was far from one-of-a-kind. The iconic singer recently sat down with Pride Source to argue a number of topics, including her relationship with the lesbian, gay, pansexual and transgender (LGBT) group, as well as her own sexuality. During the course of the discussion the interviewer referenced a quote from Entertainment Weekly in when the O'Connor claimed: "I'm three-quarters heterosexual, a quarter gay." When questioned what fraction of her is gay now, O'Connor responded:
I don't have faith in labels of any kind, put it that way. If I drop in love with someone, I wouldn't give a shit if they were a man or a woman What I'm trying to say is, I'm old enough not to be going by my dick. It's not about what gets my dick hard or not. I'm old enough for that to not be the point. But I ponder maybe females are unlike -- what makes us want to have sex with someone is that we like their traits. Guys, whether they're male lover or straight, you all just like to fuck and think later [laughs].
