Pride Amsterdam Canal Parade

The world famous Canal Parade: Saturday, August 2,

The canal parade is part of Pride Amsterdam: Saturday July 26, through Sunday August 3,

The Canal Parade traditionally marks the end of the Amsterdam Pride Week.

Featuring 80 decorated boats, the annual boat parade sees Amsterdam&#;s canals lined by over half a million spectators. The event demonstrates and celebrates the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community in the Netherlands (or Holland, if you will).

This is Amsterdam&#;s second biggest event, topped only by King&#;s Day.

It also is the largest pride event in the Netherlands, and one of the largest and foremost in the world.

Description

Pride Amsterdam is a festival to celebrate that you can 'be who you are, love who you want'. This festival is mainly celebrated by the LHBTQI community from the last Saturday in July until the first Sunday in August and consists of several components. The most famous part is the Canal Celebration, in which a procession of 80 boats cruise through the waters of Amsterdam for 2 hours, which is visited by hundreds of thousands of colourfully dressed visitors. Other parts of the Identity festival are: Pride Walk, Identity festival Park, Open Air Cinema, Senior Pride Concert, All Colours East, Love Float, street parties and a closing party. The belated mayor Eberhard van der Laan said about the Pride: ‘Pride Amsterdam is not just any event. It is a symbol of the open and tolerant city we long for to be. We commemorate the freedom to be yourself. For twenty years, the boat parade has been inextricably linked to Amsterdam and

The Route

The parade kicks off around PM at the Scheepvaartmuseum (Maritime Museum), in the eastern part of the city centre. From there, the boats will sail along the Amstel River, continuing onto the Prinsengracht, and concluding near the Westerdok.

Please note: First boats reach the start of the Prinsengracht approximately after the official start.

Times shown on the route are just an indication. Some years everything goes to plan, some other years there are "traffic delays" because of broken boats on the canals.

Best Viewing Spots

The parade path stretches several kilometers, offering many fantastic spots to watch the spectacle. However, it gets extremely busy—especially on bridges and quays—so plan to arrive early.

Popular viewing locations:

  • Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge): a scenic initial point on the path. Boats arrive here soon after the start.
  • Along the entire Prinsengracht: great views and occasional shady spots.
  • Eenhoornsluis: at the end of the route, offering terrific photo opportunities.

Bridges fill up hours before the procession begins, so be promptly if you want
