Is regina george gay

Mean Girls came out in 2004, which is so hard to believe because it remains so ingrained in pop culture and absolutely iconic nearly 20 years later…which, yes, that makes me feel hella old, so let’s just move on.

While the show purports to be about Cady’s journey from outcast to Mean Girl to Regular Girl, the genuine star of the reveal is Queen Bee herself Regina George. She’s mean, a fashion icon, silly rich, and also a closeted queer girl. And I have proof.

As the leader of The Plastics, she has an image she needs to uphold: the popular, beautiful “It” girl with the hottest guy as her boyfriend/girlfriend. There’s no room for her to be gay, especially if she wants to keep her social standing. In addition, this was 2004. Gay marriage was still over a decade from being legalized in America, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer had just killed off one of their only female homosexual characters the year prior. Needless to say, it wasn’t an awesome age to be a lesbian.

The evidence shows itself in Regina’s attraction to Cady: “You’re, like, really pretty.” Sure, girls call each other pretty all the time, and Regina was certa

With a Mean Girls reimagining around the corner, let’s take a look at the theories surrounding its iconic villain’s sexuality

BY NIC CROSARA

The 2004 Mean Girls film is a staple high school production. Decades after its emit and many of us are still dressing up as the iconic characters for Halloween and regularly quoting the film. It’s a queer classic and its hopefully about to get even queerer in the 2024 musical movie imagining.

Bisexual actor and musician Reneé Rapp will be stepping into the pink high heels of iconic villain Regina George (she also previously portrayed the character in the Broadway musical). And recently the star posted a mirror selfie to Instagram with the caption reading: “Regina George was a lesbian.”

While LGBTQIA audiences around the world are expecting the upcoming take on Mean Girls to be more overtly queer than the original, there hold been many fan theories surrounding the iconic villain’s sexuality. And Reneé’s recent post makes it sound that she is in total agreement.

For the uninitiated, the original Denote Girls film follows Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) as she joins a brand-new school. She’s t

why i think regina george is a lesbian

something about the story janis and damian tell cady just seems off. not in a way like they made it up, but in a way that they don’t have the full picture. honestly, they seemed kind of bewildered about it, too. why would regina all of a sudden, after having been friends with janis for years, confront her about being a lesbian? who put that concept in her head?

could it have been a homophobic father who, as far as the musical is concerned, seems to be out of the picture, or at least very much out of regina’s life now? i contemplate that someone, most likely her dad, was like, “hey, regina, you and that janis kid seem near. does she have, fond of, a thing for you? because, y’know, that would be bad.” and lil regina was like “fuck fuck fuck  have a thing for her but this person, who is hella authoritative in my life, can NEVER. KNOW. because they Would Not Like It so i must trim that gay shit out.” cue confronting janis and projecting onto her (which is wrong, and internalized homophobia doesn’t make it not a fucked up thing to do).

something a lot of you don’t seem to get is, throughout the play, we never once see regina explicitly call

Mean Girls is gay now. At least that’s what the press about the new movie musical indicates.

It’s not an inaccurate evaluation. Though Damian was always gay, in this iteration, Jaquel Spivey brings his larger-than-life Broadway flair to the role. The biggest change is the ethics of Janis, played by the talented Auli'i Cravalho. In the 2004 clip, the gossip about Janis (Lizzy Caplin) is that she’s a lesbian, but she puts this rumor to bed by virtual dating Kevin G (Rajiv Surendra) in the epilogue. In the new movie, Janis is gay for actual, and thus the rumors are not really rumors anymore.

Spivey and Cravalho carry a lot to their roles, which haven’t changed all that much since 2004. Spivey’s Damian is unapologetic in his flamboyance, as is this updated Janis. Cravalho is well-cast in the role. Her vocals are first-rate, but it’s the indignant swagger she brings to the character that makes this new Janis shine. We
