The Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus (SGMC) is one of the oldest and largest LGBTQ+ performing arts organizations in the Sacramento region. The chorus was founded in 1984 as a singing group that aimed to foster a feeling of community and sustain gay men in the Sacramento area during the AIDS crisis. SGMC now consists of 110 singers from diverse backgrounds, merged by a love of music and a promise to promoting social justice, equality, and LGBTQ+ rights through the power of music.  SGMC is involved to promoting visibility and understanding of the Homosexual community and creating a more inclusive and accepting society. The chorus is also known for its high-quality performances that showcase a wide range of musical genres, from pop to classical and everything in between. The chorus’s performances are not only entertaining but also meaningful, as they often speak to important social issues and promote messages of acceptance, love, and understanding.

New Home for the Holidays

How are the rehearsals going for this year’s holiday concert?

It’s really a lot of exciting energy. Pre-pandemic, we had around 60 people singing in the chorus. Now we own 130 singers on the rolls. So we’re trying to manage this huge growth and welcome fresh people. It can be a bit daunting walking into a room of 130 people.

You joined the chorus as its unused artistic director just a few months ago, so this will be your first time helming the hotly anticipated holiday entertainment. What can audiences await this year?

I programmed a show that lives on nostalgia, a lot of camp, some reflective moments, and then some dancing for everybody to receive excited about. That’s what audiences are expecting from us. Nostalgic camp, I’ll say. For “Holiday Hits with a Splash of Sass,” you have to do the movement. [Heetland snaps a Z shape through the air.] Splash… of… sass. It’s a tradition.
