Gay bar new hope

Along a now-forgotten thoroughfare, New Hope, Pennsylvania was once considered the halfway point between Philadelphia and New York City. In the last half-century, gays and lesbians have discovered the beauty that brought in artists early the 1900s. You will sense as though you’re stepping back in time. Certainly the modern conveniences are there, but without the modern encumbrances. You big-city types may have to slam on the brakes to appreciate the tranquility of mind you’ll locate there. New Hope provides the perfect setting for replacing that annoying cell phone with the heated, probably somewhat neglected hand of your partner.

NEW HOPE - The first time Larry Melo stepped into a gay prevent he didn’t know what to expect.

“Even as a gay guy, my first experience out in the world was so alternative than what I imagined it would be,” Melo recalled. 

It was 1979, in New York City. His cousin, who was also gay, suggested the two grab a drink at Jan Wallman’s on Cornelia Street in Greenwich Village. 

"I thought it would be seedy," he remembered thinking as they made their way into the metropolis. But once inside the cabaret bar and restaurant, that notion quickly disappeared.

“I didn’t know it would be so sophisticated. The bar was gorgeous with beautiful lighting and lush seating. The men were so handsome and well-dressed. It was just engaging to see there was a place they could go and be relaxed, and it wasn’t taboo,” he said.

“It was my first time being in a bar surrounded with all gay men. It made me feel appreciate there was a normalcy here that I didn’t expect,” he added. “It was home for them.”

This sense of home and normalcy is what Melo hopes to create inside The Cub Room, an intimate bar in Modern Hope he reopened first this year.

The New Prelude

New Prelude was located at York Thoroughfare and Route 202 in Bucks County, PA. Ground-level bar and you stepped down a few steps to the dance floor. Weekly nightlife and Fantastic Halloween parties.

Oh, yes, perform I remember don from The New Prelude! And Don of course, who was apparently one of the proprietors. He liked me and even though there was a five-dollar cover to get in there on Weekends, he always saw to it that

I never paid! After all five dollars was a lot of currency to an underage young man way back then! Right after you walked in on the left was a little cubby – hole of a lock, where a nice fresh man named “Glennie” was the barkeep. He even made ” The Orgasm!” It was a delicious drink, and the first time I had ever heard of it. And ” Glennie ” is still working in attractive New Hope to this very day! Yes, I also remember Nancy; a little on the tough side, though with a heart o’ gold.

She worked in what was then the coatroom, just as you entered the place. In later years, The New Prelude also opened a fine restaurant down a few steps and even a great piano lounge. Boy, do I miss it there. No place around anymore which o
