If there&#;s one thing gay men distinguish about their milieu, it&#;s the rather severe ageism that pervades it. Profiles on sex sites often set strict guidelines around age: No one over 40, no one over 30, some even utter no one over Not only is being male lover expensive—a new leather jacket is required every year—but it&#;s also, apparently, a young man&#;s game.
Thus Montrealer Chris Wilson—out and arrogant since the early 70s—is definitely a trailblazer. At the age of 82, he remains active on the sex and singles&#; scene in La Belle Province, cruising sites enjoy Grindr, Adam4Adam, and Squirt. Wilson sat down with VICE to chat about what it&#;s like to meet up online when you&#;re an octogenarian.
VICE: When did you first obtain into sex sites?
Chris Wilson: About seven years ago. I think I got some spam, which interested me, and I went to a site called &#;Horny Matches.&#; Everyone seemed to be really false and never around. The image I had conjured of the thirty-two-year-old currently en route to my front door from our meager interaction on Grindr was as telling as a police report: an assumed age, height, and weight, as well as one scrupulously selected profile picture. And often enough, the photo too ended up a rough sketch. These physical characteristics as good as a few words – “What are you into?” – were all that had been exchanged between me and this city planner from Washington D.C.
This was last summer when I had just turned twenty-two, fresh off the boat from flirting with my first serious relationship. I was seasick, and as this older man and I hit the sheets, I found that my body struggled to deliver what I had ordered.
When everything physical was said and done, we nestled in my bed together where I offered my condolences for my sexual underperformance. “I’m sorry, you’re just the first guy since my breakup,” I said. Confidently, he checked the time on his iPhone, which was perched on my nightstand and looked up at me. “Well, there’s good news and there’s bad news. Which do you want first?” he asked.

Sex is something that most humans crave; in this new age of technology, an app to make hooking up easier was destined to come to fruition.
Grindr is an LGBTQ+ app that mostly is used by gay and bisexual men for hookups. This app is accessible for anyone to download, and operate, no matter what age they are.
Of course, there is an age requirement for the app. You have to be eighteen years of age to have a profile, but Grindr lacks the security it needs to enforce that rule; there is no required proofof age to make a profile, so the requirement is more of a loose suggestion.
Having underage children is a problem their app faces, since almost anyone is able to lie down about their age to become a user. In fact, many underage homosexual teenagers make a Grindr profile to have their first sexual experience, trying their best to pair the experiences that their straight peers around them are having.
As a younger teenager, I knew to avoid Grindr for as long as I could; I did not long for to be sucked into the murky water of that app.
