This week’s post for LGBT+ History Month features a personal reminiscence from the Leader of North Hertfordshire District Council, some insights into the equalities policies that the council has created and a reminiscence by the blog author.
NHDC leader Martin Stears-Handscomb, a 70year-old councillor who lives in Letchworth and is married to Ian, writes:
Growing up in Isle of Wight in the 1950s and 60s, being lgbtq+ was not an option. Indeed, ‘being gay’ didn’t mean what it does now and by the time I went away to Uni in 1969, I was engaged to a girl. I was questioning my sexuality and maybe that was why that relationship didn’t last.
Homosexuality was illegal until 1967 and only then in private. As far as I knew I had never met a lgbtq+ person – apart from an older lad at school who had been made fun of and accused of “being a homo”. I didn’t wish to be “one of them”.
I met a beautiful woman when I came to work in Stevenage. One thing led to another and in 1976 we got married. Twenty years and four children later the marriage ended – mainly because for me, political activism came first.

Appeal court increases jail word after Grindr police sting
A former school bus driver who thought he was meeting a 13-year-old lad through a dating app has had his jail term doubled by the Court of Appeal.
Robert Alan Woolner, 55, of Gonville Gardens, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, was arrested after driving to meet "Ben" on 28 October last year.
He admitted a series of offences - and was jailed for 12 months in July.
Lord Justice Davis commanded Woolner's sentence was "unduly lenient" and increased the term to 30 months.
The court heard that Woolner had contacted someone he believed to be a teenager - but was an undercover police officer - on the same-sex attracted dating app Grindr.
He asked "Ben" about his sexual experiences and requested an intimate picture, the court heard.
Woolner admitted one count of attempting to arrange or facilitate the commission of a youth sex offence, one calculate of possessing extreme pornography and a number of offences of recording an image of a person beneath their clothing without consent.
